The poker room makes money from Rake. They pay a distinct amount of this rake to the network, let’s say 20%. They now have 80% left of their profit but by offering rakeback (to attract more clients) they have to pay a chunk of that profit back to the player. 50% is not an unusual number. Then it’s the site handling the rakeback (there are lots of those affiliates) time to get a cut, say he gets 10%. 100 (total rake)-20 (to the network)-50 (to the player) -10 (to the affiliate) givers the poker room only 20% left of their rake as profit.

This seems fair but the thing is that rakeback deals usually only steals away good players from other sites in the same network. By offering these big bonuses you take away all the money making players from the sites that attract players in to the network and turns them in to players that actually don’t make that much money any more. So The networks all agree that Rakeback is bad because it kills profits in total and have therefore (most of them) disallowed rakeback in the network.

For players though, Rakeback is the absolutely best for the same reasons.
